Burning Letters in Houses

baby what are you going to do

the next time she comes running back,

with flames following her through the woods.

as she comes trampling in through that front door

into the burning flames she started last night,

and sets more fires ablaze

than you even know what to do with,

and all you want to do is run; but

she has a handwritten love note in her hands,

strewn with all the tears that she could cry

in the last five minutes.

---

so you said it’s all got to be okay,

because she’s back with another apology.

what are you going to do tonight?-

to keep the fire in the chimney,

and stop it spreading across the table.

what are you going to do?-

to make sure all the broken glass shards

land in the trash bin only,

and not just as another scar across your heart.

how are you going to trust this time?-

that she comes back and says it will be better now.

---

what are you going to do this time, my dear?-

as she claims she’s sorry for using that name again;

she claims she learned her lesson,

but it will just be for another six hours

until she wakes up again and suddenly--

she doesn’t care about what hurts you.

when you say “please don’t,” she will burn your eggs,

and then leave the plate in the sink for another seven days.

as she leaves, she tells you she is going out to the bars tonight,

and doesn’t know what time she will be back home.

---

run away from the burning house before she is home.
